Dolendo Typecafe is a display typeface developed as a college assignment, inspired by Ondel-Ondel, Jakarta’s iconic traditional giant dolls. The typeface draws visual influence from the distinctive crown worn by Ondel-Ondel, particularly the coconut flower ornaments (kembang kelapa) that symbolize strength, resilience, and usefulness in Indonesian culture.
These cultural elements are translated into bold letterforms with expressive cuts, serrated details, and dynamic shapes that reflect the energetic and playful character of Ondel-Ondel. The irregular edges and strong contrast give the typeface a handcrafted, lively feel while maintaining legibility for display purposes. Both uppercase and lowercase characters are designed with consistent visual rhythm, allowing the typeface to feel cohesive yet expressive.
Through Dolendo Typecafe, I explored how traditional cultural symbols can be reinterpreted into contemporary typography. This project represents an experimental approach to type design, combining local Indonesian heritage with modern visual expression to create a typeface that is bold, character-driven, and culturally rooted.
